I just saw "Naked in the Ashes" a documentary about sanyasins living on the Ganges near the Indian border of Nepal. One principle sadhu is followed but about 10 are interviewed. It is a facinating inside view on a very austere lifestyle. Even a few Aghoris are presented. Part of the doc takes place at the Kumbha Mele. I highly recommend this film.
As a note- on the opening day matinee only 14 people showed up for it. Surprising since yoga is very popular here and it has been raining hard for 2 weeks straight.
Also- I found myself watching it with "2 minds". One was the slightly intiated and the other was the western thinking man. Some of what the sadhus said really hit home and I understood why they would give it all up. The contrast was I knew that many who saw the film would not really understand such conviction or even see that much of the conditions of these mens lives only occur in India. There is no place on earth quite like it. Not many places would accept such men. Poverty with purpose.
