Been wondering about Kia the big dog, John. How is she since her accident? Cassandra is rolling now that she has her wheels. Needs some incentive sometimes, treats work, tennis ball works better, snowball works best (too bad it's all gone now). The biggest problem is that her rear feet drag till bloody when she does not feel like using them, so now she also has to learn to adapt to booties to protect those precious paws. It's so gratifying seeing her run around again. Chasing things (and us) for the first time in many months. It brought tears of joy to my eyes when we put her in the cart and she starting to adapt immediately. All that boredom and all her energy pent up due to the back problems. But now she is happy, the little dog smile is back. We have always called her "Cassarole;" now it's "Cassaroller." The worst is when people walk bye and say "Awe" with pity. I try to explain how happy she is, and we are, that she has her mobility and fun back. Will post photos from our video if I learn how to capture the stills and post here. B

I am the mom to two cats: Maya, a four year old champagne Burmese; and Bumble, a two year old black "mutt" I adopted on Halloween two years ago. I can't express how much having them has brought to my life. Maya was named for Dr. Angelou, Bumble for the Abominable Snowman from "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." She was hopelessly clumsy when she was a kitten but quite resilient. In keeping with Yukon Cornelius' revealing to Hermie the elf that bumbles bounce, I named my kitty as such. After I broke up with my ex a couple of years ago, they made the transitions so much easier by giving me the chance to take my attention off of myself and not wallow in my misery. And when I was miserable, they would do something that would end up with me rolling on the couch laughing. I wake up in the morning with one under the blankets and one next to my head on the pillow, both purring to beat the band. Pure bliss...kinda like savasana after a tough practice! Irresponsible and flighty? yeah that's the ticket. Prone to random acts of travelling. Not a stable home for a sweet kitty/kitties. Just love 'em though.

Like when we were in Iceland this summer, staying on working farms, I had an opportunity to ride the famous strong but tiny Icelandic (don't call them ponies) horses. But my beloved was dead set against it. No astangi he, just an animal lover and he thinks it's cruel and won't do it. It's one of those ideas I have to mull over, ruminate on for a while. From an ahimsa standpoint, I think he's right. You are forcing a living creature to carry your weight and bend to your will. I used to be very pro death penalty, but now I am against it. The more I think about it, the more I think I will probably change my mind on this, too. John: tell us what's up with the big dog!

Posts: 3229 (01/04/01 23:43:28) Top Doc Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	he's doing fine. yes, he is a he. the seemingly 'feminine' ending throws people off. but he is all guy (well, not all. there's a couple of manly details we had removed when he was about a year old). our female akita (may she rest in peace) never had any aggression towards other dogs, but kia is genetically impelled to challenge and dominate any other male he comes across. and any barky or snippy females too. course, since i'm the alpha wolf of the pack, he knows his place with me. we look quite the silly package when we take walks with my mom's wired haired fox terrier. mr mondo furrball akita and ms petite terrier. she's actually the one who tries to get it on with every other dog we walk by. terriers would attack a lion. blind, stupid bravery. pound for pound, a jack russell terrier would shame any rottweiler or other mean-seeming dog on the visciousness scale. terriers were born and bred for one thing only--to hunt down and kill prey. kia could take her out with one bite, but when he's feeling his oats and tries to hassle her, she regularly backs him off with these incredibly fearsome lunges at his face. if she's over to visit, and one of the dog bowls is empty, she's the one growling him off. they make an interesting canine yin and yang

Because he was such a magnificnt specimin (good grey/blue colour, gooseberry eyes, big and healthy) and had a good pedegree, breeders were always calling up and wanting to mate their dogs with him. But Mad Max had only one love in his life and that was my little brother. Max took one look at Corey and decided he was the ONE. That night, after a day of harrassment for Corey and one of joy for the dog, Max broke into Corey's bedroom and tried to rape him. The cries could be heard for miles. Corey was 17 by then, and was a big strapping lad, but evrn big stapping lads are powerless in the face of 14 stone of amourous, tripe-breath, sexually frustrated dane. When me and Nick (my then-partner) finally stopped laughing and went to his rescue, we found a bedraggled and traumatised teenager in the hall, desperately trying to keep the door shut on a VERY Mad Max. Corey never came to stay the night again. $:\$

I don't know who brought up the idea, but I was not keen on it. Visions of me being thrown off the horse was scary enough to keep me from getting on one. At any rate, not wanting to be a wimp - I got on. It was a group ride and at first, I thought, 'well it's no so bad we are just trotting.' A few minutes later, I thought, 'do horses like this day after day?' Not too long after, some jack@$$ made a comment about the horses not being 'able to go.' I think that angered the trail leader and he kicked his horse and sped off. All the others followed in suit. I was horrified and scared because we were going (in my mind) extremely fast. I think my horse was really pissed off and didn't want me riding him. The horse of galloping so fast, I could not control him. So now, I was am totally convinced that I am going to be thrown off this horse. I prayed hard and fast that I would survive the ride. I did, and since then no more horse riding for me. Ok - so maybe I got scared into never riding them again, as opposed to it being animal abuse. But I think, if you love horses and enjoy their strength and beauty, that's okay vs. people who just use them without feeling a connection and love for their horse.

I think I was 6; my family had taken us to a "dude ranch" in Montana for holiday. The day we arrived this fellow was in the ring, putting on a macho act with the horse as victim: violently kicking and pulling back the reins at the same time, working the poor horse into a frenzy. Well, he got the horse to bucking and kept egging him on and finally the horse threw the bastard off; not content to get him off his back, the horse deliberately rolled on him, a few times for good measure. I loved hroses so much I remember not feeling bad for the man but for the horse. (Tho now that I think of it, the horse was probably "put down" for his act.) The flip side happened the same week. I was playing in a sand box as the horse round-up was going on. The cowboys were herding the horses back into the corral after they had their "day off" of open grazing. I don't know whether the did not see me or were just having fun, but whatever, they decided to stampede the horses through the sandbox. I saw them coming and froze: could not move. About a hundred horses thundered past me, and not a single hoof nicked this terrified child.

Our 11 year old had wanted a kitten forever and finally the time was right to get one. Got her from the pound-best described as a mut- white with grey stripe pathes and orange patches with any luck, will try to turn her into a dog versus scary cat that pounces on you in the middle of the night and gets all anitsocial. One question- what is the deal with the purrrrr- it'll turn it on when shes rubbed and can even keep going when she's eating - does it really mean happiness? I hope so. Gotta go now and put a worm pill down her throat! s

Actually, the dog thinks she's our kid and the cat's her dog. Juniper plays fetch, retrieving small objects I toss for her, such as hair ties. Also plays a modified soccer with a tennis ball, batting it back to me when I roll it her way. Is klutzy and walks heavy, very unlike what a cat should be. Follows us around the house, rather than the aloofness that is ascribed to cats. She is a big purrrrer, loud, when she is happy, but not during eating, only after meals after she has cleaned herself and is curled up. Don't know why they do that, but it is lovely. Sometimes Juniper will try to clean Cassandra's ears.

Posts: 42 (01/11/01 20:18:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	its funny isn't it how there's always this thought that dogs and cats don't get a long at all.... one question Bandita and any other cat people out there - when we got her from the pound the vet said number one that if we wanted to keep her an inside cat that was a good idea as there is so much birdlife and not to mention nasty things like ticks, etc here that theres more harm for a cat here in the outside world. Ok- well that was what we kind of had in mind as we have a good size house with plenty of places to hide and explore in. She also said that we shouldnt give her milk or any other food other than science diet- which i think they have in US - as thats all she needs. Well between not letting the cat outside and not giving her roo meat- thats right kangaroo meat and fish and chips and bowls of milk, our neighbours think we're cruel. And a friend even got personal and said to me- what the hell kind of yogi are you? hmmmmph! i have a vet appointment in a week or so and i'll discuss this with her but in the meantime any thoughts on inside cats and what snacks are really good for them?

Posts: 3229 (01/11/01 21:35:30) Top Doc Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	while we always had cats in our home growing up, i've tried to avoid them where where we live now. they are just easy game for coyotes--it's not fair to the cats. the other draw back is that cats seem to spread their fleas to the rest of the household, more so than dogs, at least that's been my experience. in recent years, say the last 8 or so, there's a product for dogs and cats, available thru vets, to help control their pests. it is called Advantage here in the US. you just squeeze a small amount between the shoulder blades of the animal and no pests for a month. should work for ticks too i would think. as for eats, i would think a nice juice of pureed mice, squirrels, and any available road kill should do the trick ;-). inside vs out? well, most cats do both, whether we want them to or not. is it safe for cats outside where you live? can't be many dingos as predators. probably the greatest risk to cats outside, esp at night, is other cats. there can be some really frightful fights with the resulting trips to the vet and weeks of antibiotics. it's pretty darn hard to completely sequester a cat indoors. let them go out with you, emphasize the tribal thing. they adopt it pretty well. so i would say both in and out.

The flea stuff you're talking about here is frontline- and just used it the other day -seems like a major advance as far as that prob goes. What would be ideal for me is if the cat was to go outside, it would just hang on the porch or in the back, versus climbing trees and roaming around other houses.....hmmmmm, howdya train em to do dat?

Posts: 3229 (01/11/01 23:08:55) Top Doc Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	<<hmmmmm, howdya train em to do dat? >> that's the nice thing about this place--the great sense of humor. that's a good one sue. i know that some people use "invisible fences" to keep their dogs on their property. would probably work for cats too. not too ahimsic though, the electric shock aversion training aspect of it, but works for some. cats really vary, some are very skittery and never go far from the comforts of their porch. others are such free spirits that they border on feral. just gotta let your cat figure it out. we lived in san carlos when we first moved to SD, just a couple of miles from del cerro. such a small world sometimes. coyotes are quite common. i was playing a round of golf at balboa, a local muni course located in balboa park, the SD equivalent of a large urban park. i saw a small dog coming up to our group. turns out it was a coyote pup, probably less than a year old and was so accomadated to city life and golfers that he was looking for a free handout. they go where they want when they want.
