I have been practising Ashtanga for a couple of years now and have begun suffering from two chronic injuries over the past year. One is to my knees (especially the left one), the other is pain in my upper leg, close to the sit bones but not in the hamstrings (its not sciatica because the pain is only in one spot during forward bends and doesn't travel down my leg).
I've spoken to my teachers who say, just keep practising it will go away but it doesn't. I've been to doctors and they can't seem to diagnose anything either. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong or how to stop the pain.
Additionally, I met quite a few other students that have these kind of minor injuries that may be small today, but could turn into greater problems in the future.
What I would like to do is:
1) Collect people's experiences with minor Ashtanga injuries
2) Obtain experienced teacher's opinion as to their causes
3) Obtain experienced teacher's adjustments or counter poses to prevent and/or treat these minor injuries
The most common injuries I've heard of are:
1) knees
2) sciatica
3) sit bone pain
4) wrists
5) shoulders
I would greatly appreciate all your input!
Thanks,
Natalie
