As long as there is no malnutrition, it obviously helps to eat more, and don't skip any meals; that is if you wish to gain weight, though some may ask why.
The ideal amongst Ashtangis seems to be leaning towards a lean and light body, rather than a heavy, big and strong one. Personally, I am at least as impressed
by buddha-like figures doing yoga, as by athletic gymnasts doing the almost humanly impossible.
However, if you are undernourished - if you for some reason suffer from failure of the body to absorb, or assimilate, nutrients properly - you might want to take it to a specialist in the field of health care and nutrition. Some people might need special diets, due to lactose intolerance, gluten allergies and what not. Usually, if you keep to a healthy (well-balanced and plentiful) diet with good appetite in a relaxed environment and maybe with enough time to have dessert, then you should be well-nourished. And if you have healthy habits of resting and sleeping properly, you have plans and ambitions in your life, and you are connecting well with other people (especially friends and family) with no excess of stress in your life, there should not be any problems with weight loss, unless if you burn off more energy than you possibly can replenish. If you are of less than average height, 52 kg might just be normal for you. It is not dangerous to be thin. To worry too much, eat junk food, not sleep enough at night - that can be very bad. Don't 'supersize'. Let your appetite and palate be your guide. It is better to eat e.g. four or five times a day, than once or twice but more than your stomach can handle. Some lean people find that body building exercises helps in gaining weight, so you might want to focus more on muscle strength in your practice, and finish with an extra long savasana under a warm/comfy blanket. |
