I was wondering if there was an age limit for starting Yoga? All the programs show people in their 20's or early 30's.
Thanks,
Edna

Hello,
I was wondering if there was an age limit for starting Yoga? All the programs show people in their 20's or early 30's. Thanks, Edna |

As an add-on. I notice there are different kinds of yoga. Perhaps some types are appropriate and others are not if you are middle aged or higher?

all yoga is for everyone of all ages. you should find a style you like (this is an ashtanag vinyasa board in the style of Vidan Pattabhi Jois) and then find a teacher that moves you slowly through and helps you to progress at the appropriate pace for you situation.

Don't worry about age. I am 58 and my wife is 57 and we both practice Ashtanga Vinyasa. Some parts have been adapted to our day to day conditions, but for the most part we do just fine. Look for a teacher who has some experience working with older adults and have fun.

I would say if you are elderly and have never experienced the benefits of a regular yoga practice, begin now and watch what happens. Sri KP has lectured many times on the cures that our yoga can bring but in a simplier message, I think you'll find that you will be able to move more freely and will smile a little more often because you will feel better than you would if you were sedendary. The other more subtle benefits will be apparent after you begin your practice. Don't be put off by the photos of 20 and 30 year olds, this is marketing, but why not publish what sells? I started Ashtanga in my early twenties; the person who impressed me most was not another young athlete or yogi but Sri KP in his mid-sixties. I have a photo of him hanging out with his shirt off in the California sun that I look at on a regular basis. I have always made it a goal to be at least as fit as he was at sixty when I hit 60, and to accomplish this goal, I practice daily. Best of luck! |

"For those over fifty, it is enough to practice some of the simpler asanas and pranayamas. However, those who have practiced for many years can do any
asana without a problem." SKPJ in Yoga Mala (as i recall)
yes, it think it will be very interesting to see still practicing ashtangis as they age... personally id like to be plasticised and perhaps tour india.. or maybe it be practicised.. im only 60.. and still swingin tru.. of course, your milage may vary Best of luck! |
