Hello, everyone! My name is mayaroo and I am the moderator of the Newcomer forum. I have not been able to visit here in quite a while since I do not have a home computer for the time being. I tend to lurk much more than post whenever I can get onto a computer.

I noticed today that there are a lot of newcomers who have posted in this forum, and I wanted to streamline the introductions so that they are all in one place. If there is anyone new to the board who would like to introduce themselves, please do it here.

In order to keep this forum streamlined, I have moved the posts of the people who introduced themselves in the month of January to the Ghats II. I will move the February posts at the end of the month.

Future newcomers, please post here in the Introduce Yourself topic.

Hi!
I just found found this forum! It is awesome!
I am a 22 yo female from Quebec, Canada. I'm pretty new to yoga but I love everything about it since I have started. I got interested in yoga as cross training for horse riding, but I'm now developping a real interest in it, and continue to enjoy the benefits it brings to my riding and to my life.

You're lucky to have yogavt close at hand. Are you going to Nancy's workshops there this summer? Was thinking of heading North...
Where's grad school? Maybe there's a good shala nearby.

Now that you've introduced yourself, and mentioned the connection with Nancy Gilgoff, I understand why you encouraged people to start practicing 2nd series!

Anyway, regarding New Mexico - oh well, you said Albequerque (spelling problem). If you were in Santa Fe, there's Tias Little. He co-directs a school with his wife. I've never practiced with him, but I've heard great things from people who have. I'm not sufficiently computer savvy to paste a link to his school's website, but if you do a google search for "Tias Little", you'll find it.

Nancy is great! Glad to find another fan.

i've surfed on the web a bit about tias. seems interesting enough.

i guess it's a controversial issue - if we aren't practicing every day - are we doing more harm than good? are we practicing correctly? if we are dwelling in primary series for very long, are we doing too much forward bending? are we idling away?

as our lineage grows in popularity, the original teacher(s) are harder to come by for most. butit is(my opinion) very important to preserve the traditions, even though they shift and change. it really scares me to see some "power yogas" that are pretty much like aerobics classes or something. its approaches like this where people seem to get hurt, mostly physically. taking something like ashtanga out of it's sequence, and intentions, well that seems like an opportunity for physical and spiritual hurt. i'm thinking alot of ashtangi's groove with that.

Tias Little is amazing. Was John Scott's roomate in Mysore many years back. Also Sonya Luz in Taos has her own studio and is long time student of Guruji. Do not worry about all that stuff. just keep your intention pure. and do practice.

Hi all! I have been visiting the board for several months, and have posted a few times, and feel it is about time that I introduce myself.

I have been practicing Ashtanga on and off for about 4 years. Unfortunately, mostly off. I have pretty tight legs and hips - each leg has been in a full length cast. I find that even if I practice very gently, I have sore hamstrings for 4-5 days after I practice. In the vein of trying to be gentle on my aging body (I'm in my early 40s) I end up practicing less frequently than I would like. I have had deep hamstring/hip pain that has kept me away from practicing for extended periods.

The studio where I have done most of my practicing is an offshoot of Sri Larry. However, I feel that I need to try to get back to the roots of Ashtanga and practice in the "true" manner. I have located a studio that I think will do the job, but haven't gotten to it yet. I am not good a practicing on my own, and am so tight in the mornings that I am not sure I will be able to manage the 6:00 mysore class. This is my intent however.

I have long loved Indian culture, and recently married a wonderful Indian woman. I love reading, cooking, and music, particularly in the context of India.

hey curry, welcome. thanks for contibuting. without other people adding their 2 cents, this would would be a dull place indeed.

with regards to the stiff hammies, i have to tell you , i can empathize. but, until you do stretch them regularly, they will hurt. your body will be constantly trying to "heal" the recent stretch and that inflammation will cause discomfort. with regular stretching, and the more regular the sooner this will happen, the pain goes away. but by that time, you will be on to new discomforts, like kapotasana or dwi pada sirsasana or hanumansana or something

Hi -

I was going to repond with something similar to what okrgr wrote. I used to have experiences similar to what you describe: sore hamstrings for days....Regular practice really does help. Okrgr could probably give you a detailed medical/anatomical explanation of the stretch-pain-stretch again-less pain syndrome. But I can say that this approach has helped me. On days when I'm really sore (hasn't happended in a while) or somewhat fatigued, my teacher said to do an abbreviated practice rather than skipping the day. Do your sun salutions - rain or shine (bad almost pun - apologies). Be gentle with yourself, but do it every day (or 4-6x/week). I can speak to the therapeutic effects of the Primary Series. I was a wreck when I started. Much better now. Also, some of the postures will target other areas of your body, which will take some pressure off the hamstrings. As your back and hips open up, the hamstrings will be less stressed. As a person with hamstring problems, I was advised to do all forward bends by "curling" forward (sometimes considered "old style") with a very strong uddiyana bandha. It makes a difference. Thanks for the suggestions. In reading this board over the past few several months I have been inspired by the commitment that is shown by many of you.

I am relieved to hear that others have (are still) experiencing what I experience and that regular practice is the solution. I will practice at least my sun As and Bs regularly.

Do you think that it makes sense for me to do this in the evenings when I am less tight? This morning in the shower I did a very gentle forward bend and really felt the beginnings of a very strong pull in the deep hamstrings. I am afraid that if I even try gentle As and Bs in the morning that I will overstrain the muscles. Coulter's book suggests that in mornings you know the areas where you really need the work. I know this already, at least for now! In your experiences, what are the risks? Overstraining the hamstrings can put me out of commission for months. Maybe I should take this topic up in the proper forum ...

there was a mostly-lurker called "bodysings", still in the first year or so of her practice, reading all she could about ashtanga.

The club changed and little bodysings got distracted by all kinds of other things like living in France, coming home from France, new jobs, falling in love, writing, not practicing for far too long, etc... and hasn't been to either yahoo or this board since shortly after the latter's creation.

Hasn't done much with her practice, either. Some great classes one week in Montreal with Darby and Allison, but no teaching while in France, and not much to speak of here in Charlottetown.

But I guess ashtanga's in the blood, and the wannabe formerly known as bodysings happens to have a global EZ account under the name you see here, so while I try to rebuild (or truly start) my practice, I'll hang out here. I don't have much to contribute, so you won't see me posting much, but I'll lurk.

Nice to see so many familiar faces (or screen names) from the past. (okrgr- i got a blank email from you after i stopped by your blog)

I'm zearchim, new to this board and to ashtanga, but kind of an old friend of yoga (I did some yoga a long time ago, during my teenage years - teenagers whose parents don't do yoga find it cool:lol ).
To speed up our acquaintance, here a few facts about me:
* Male, 34, father of a baby boy
* Haven't done any exercise whatsoever for 15 years
* See yoga as a form of psychotherapy ("the suppression of the modifications of the mind" YS 1.2). If in the process I get fit, so much the better
* Did 4 suryanamaskara A and 3 surya B this morning, up from 3 and 3 yesterday. Getting there, no need to rush...

OK I'm feeling guilty after Banda's praise for Zearchim, so I'll make an introduction and get myself all proper. I've been mostly lurking at this site for a couple of months with only a post here and there. I'm 36 years old, female, living in the Pacific Northwest. I've been doing ashtanga for about 6 months and find it absolutely amazing that it is slowly changing my life. I have never *ever* been an athletic person (was a drama and choir geek in high school -- sucked at anything resembling organized sports), but slowly my body is becoming strong, moveable, bendable, maybe even graceful? Even on days that I'm sore sore sore I LOVE it because I can really *feel* every muscle in my body and I can feel the change happening. Mmmmm, and not just the body but the mind, too. Ujayi breathing is SO useful in Seattle traffic jams. I pick fewer fights with my husband. Yesterday there was a huge spider in my laundry room, and instead of smashing it with a shoe as I had done with every other spider I encountered I decided to just gently pick it up with a tissue and set it outside. Is that weird? I hope not, cuz I already decided that this is my new spider policy. Is it the yoga? I think maybe it is. I enjoy being a work in progress. I've really enjoyed reading through the posts here, too. There's a fabulous mix of wise sages, crack-up comedians, cynics and skeptics, and just plain humans with stiff hamstrings. Love the blogs by okrgr, abby and others, too -- thanks for your time and dedication.

hello everyone.
I'm new, just found this. I've just started practising ashtanga - I currently take my Beginner's 1 course at the Practice Place in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm just so taken with ashtanga. I've been trying to do my own practise as well 2-3 times a week - no where near getting through even half of the primary series, at best I am happy to do 5 of each of the sun salutations! But I do like that I am learning in a progressive fashion. Recently got the book "Yoga Mala" but have not read it yet. My only other experience with yoga was taking a couple classes in gyms over the years. I recently moved to Scotland from the states and immediately began to look for gyms, but did not find anyplace here that really suited me. Then a friend had suggested ashtanga - I took a beginner's weekend course and fell in love. Right after the weekend course I went on holiday, then came back and enrolled in Beginner's 1. It is really the highlight of my week right now. Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello.

Hello there - its strange how i ended up here. This morning when i logged onto my EZ account, i looked at the communities i'd recently visited - while i've never been here before, this board was apparently the last one i'd been on! Peculiar huh?

Well i took it as a sign so here i am! I'm Nicki. I'm 26, and was up until very recently, practicing Vinyasa yoga in Malaysia. I have now moved to London and am seeking to find a good ashtanga school that will have mercy on my floundering wallet. So if anyone wants to point me in the right direction, that would be grand!

Hi

Try The Yoga Place lots of great teachers. If you are after a class, Jane (Saturdays) is really interesting to study with. The Mysore class gets a bit overcrowded sometimes, the adjustments can be strong, the teacher is certified by SKPJ.

Triyoga the Mysore self-practice is very good. Dont really know the other teachers. There is plenty to choose from.

Triyoga classes cost more than Yoga Place classes.

Another Mysore class is run by Ashtanga Yoga London. Supposed to be very good. I have no experience of that school. I believe the teacher is also certified by SKPJ.

Triyoga and Yoga Place run lots of top w/shop in addition to the weekly schedule.

Hope you enjoy London. Its the best!
