Here is an interesting article on the attempt to bridge neuroscience and Tibetan Buddhist meditation:

eh
Can the "Tracing the Synapses of our Spirituality" article be read elsewhere? Maps.org seems to be a nono on our corporate network. With Love from Garvin

Garvin, some of the same material is discussed in this BBC article: Meditation mapped in monks.

Entheogenic Sects and Psychedelic Religions | ||

You gotta love some of these sects, like the one where people dose themselves and then watch an 'Altar of silent T.V.'s on different stations'. For californian ashtangis the yogic sect where the ultimate goal for the disciple is to meditate in a full lotus position continuously for at least ten hours while under the influence of over a thousand micrograms of LSD might prove interesting. |

and his deus ex machina. Persingers God machine both amuses and terrifies me. I find his comment that generating religious like experiences in the lab is neither proof nor denial of the existence of God very intriguing.

V.S. Ramachandran has a chapter in "Phantoms in the Brain" devoted to the connection between the temporal lobe (TL seizure patients) & spiritual experience. Very interesting book. One of my faves.

Do you think Jesus or other people who founded religions might have had TLE? It would explain their sometimes bizarre experiences and beliefs:

tonglen practice | ||
|
The reasonably (?) well-known Westerner-turned-Buddhist nun Pema Chodron has written several books about the tonglen practice found in Tibetan Buddhism (she a disciple of the late Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche). She is profiled at www.shambhala.org. I have listened to some of her tapes extensively and found the practice (to the limited degree I feel I have utilized it) to encourage the quality of compassion...
