I'd appreciate any feedback out there--

I've been practicing for several years and also teach yoga. Yesterday, in Kurmasana, I literally HEARD my left hamstring (up where the thigh connects into
the hip socket--my anatomy terminology sucks...) make a loud "POP" and pain shot up my left leg. I was being adjusted and got into the pose with not
too much fussing--

It hurts now just to sit. Has anyone else had this problem? Does it heal? How?

It's been really inspirational and I also like going into the shala to be inspired by others and to get adjustments. It's funny though about the dogs

I was watching the DVD--Ashtanga New York--the other day and a yogi was talking--saying that there were times when he loves to practice and of course, days
when he dreads it. On those days, he said that the word "yoga" really applies--the attempt to unite body and mind and just practice.

my hamstring feels longer and stronger than ever. Who knows, maybe that "pop" was "needed" to get past some problem in the leg or

Javaspeak, hamstring injuries are scary and debilitating both mentally and physically. I do remember, as mentioned, sitting on bags of frozen peas and
wondering if that would be the end of my (then) short-lived affair with Ashtanga yoga. But guess what, the hamstrings healed longer and even though the pain
recurs occasionally, so far I haven't had any long-term damage.

Don't go down the road of "too much forward bending in Primary". It's a mind trip because...

Thanks charlier1 and YogaVane for the comforting insights and the advice! It's great to not feel alone out here and the noise did really feel like a clap
so I didn't know what was happening.

I'm sometimes scared about my practice since Ashtanga seems to be all about "forward bending" in the Primary Series and I'm worried that even
doing the practice carefully (which I agree is better to heal an injury) might damage the hamstring in the long run.

since this happened to you yesterday and you are considering going to practice today, I am guessing your situation is not quite as severe as mine, because the
day after my "pop" there was absolutely no way I could even think about practicing, just getting out of bed and to the bathroom was a real challenge,
and generally I have a rather high threshold of pain. So hopefully you will heal even more quickly if the injury is not quite so severe. The advice I got on
the old thread was...

whose post from a year or so ago this thread has been linked to. So yes my hamstring made one heck of a "pop", maybe I am crazy but it seems to me
that the actual noise was as loud as a handclap. As you can see from the old thread, the next day was the worst, then better day by day. Overall not as bad
as I had feared from that initial noise and shock-wave through my pelvis. Now I do not have any restriction there at all, no pain, all good.

I never had a "pop", but I did injure both hamstrings simultaneously in 2004. At some point it was so bad that I was in constant pain, and had to sit
on a bag of frozen peas at all. My osteopath recommended to keep doing yoga but very carefully. Basically, you don't want your hamstring attachments to
heal shortened, and the only way of preventing it seems to be to keep stretching them gently. It is a very fine line, though, between keeping them long and
re-injuring them. This...

the pain shooting--it was more frightening than anything else.

I'm a little worried about practice--but usually, I find that slowly and respectfully working through an injury is better than not doing anything at all.
